Mercedes Benz safetyThe Mercedes-Benz integral safety concept encompasses a host of intelligent driving assistance systems and safety equipment deployed in four phases: “safe driving”, “when hazards occur“, “during an accident” and “after an accident”.

In the first phase, which is all about avoiding hazards from the outset, the driver is supported by various assistance systems such as 4MATIC, Active Body Control and DISTRONIC PLUS. When, in the second phase, the car identifies a potentially critical situation, the appropriate measures are initiated as needed: Windows close and seatbelts are pretensioned by an electric motor in order to optimally secure the driver and front-seat passenger to their seats. If a collision occurs, the phase-three solutions in the shape of the solid Mercedes passenger compartment and highly efficient restraint systems provide excellent protection. In phase four, depending on the nature of the accident and severity of the impact, various technologies kick in to prevent further damage and facilitate a timely rescue.

The vision behind the legendary Mercedes Benz safety can be encompassed in four distinctive areas:

Phase 1: Safe driving.
Spot AssistThe Mercedes-Benz integral safety concept incorporates a host of innovative features that help to prevent accidents. Take, for instance, Blind Spot Assist. This system recognises potential hazards in the blind spot and alerts the driver with a red triangle in the exterior mirror. If the driver nevertheless turns on the indicator, the triangle begins to flash and a warning tone also sounds.

Phase 2: When hazards occur.
When the anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE® identifies potentially critical situations,it instantly initiates preventive safety measures such as pretensioning seatbelts, closing windows andadjusting the front passenger seat into a more favour-able position for protection.

Phase 3: During an accident.
CageStrategically designed crumple zones, state-of-the-art, high-strength alloys as well as advanced restraint systems such as seatbelts and airbags offer the occupants in the passenger compartment of a Mercedes the best possible protection in the event of an accident. The solid body structure optimally distributes and absorbs the impact forces.

Phase 4: After an accident.
To prevent further damage, a Mercedes is equipped to carry out emergency procedures independently. Forinstance, the car’s engine and fuel supply are configured to automatically switch off and the hazard warning lights to activate. At the same time, all doors unlock by themselves, allowing first aidersunrestricted access to the car’s interior. A rescue guide in several languages is available for download worldwide to assist emergency services personnel.
